Jackson's back on a Williams
I think there's this music director syndrome when you
play in the group wherein you get so used to listening to the "big
picture" that you forget to listen t yourself...
Anyways, I've been listening to myself recently and I
don't like what I hear. My tone on the 3B Silver Sonic has gotten
rather shrill to my ears.
So I have set about de-SilverSonicizing it.
So I'm back on the Williams 6 for now. I have
two so I sent one on the bus to Texas for tour and kept one here to play
on until we leave next week.
So far I'm digging it. Going back to the
Williams is like immersing one's self into a large tub of warm
butter. You just bask in the horn. I am remembering now that
if you feed the Williams a constant cushion of air all of life's troubles
melt away. You don't have to finesse the airstream as much as with
the King.
I never played one with my Marcinkeiwitz Jiggs 1.7ET
(close to a 7C), it was always a 6 1/2AL or something close to that made
by Doug Elliott. Well the Earl is likeing the Marc, it gives it a
little bit of compactness and has a predictable amount of edge when
pushed.
The sound of the horn when you lean on it is tough,
meaty and with a nice bit of edge. And of course soloing on it is a
lot funner than the King. It has more "give," easier to
articulate, more separation between the partials.
Happy times!
