I think young people shouldn't worry so much about dedicating themselves to helping others and saving the world. The capacity with which a person will eventually be able to actualize change in the world correlates directly to the degree with which they love themselves, grow to know themselves, and develop themselves and their networks.

I see far too many 20 somethings grinding on alone with valiant yet small pursuits designed to affect change, neglect to holistically develop themselves and thereby never truly develop personal power.

My advice is to forget about total dedication to service (not occasionally marching on aids walks, donating to SPCA, playing an occasional benefit) and spend your time and energy doing what you want. Make a family; become a parent and a leader.  Save making the world a better place for the second and third act of the production. The world will still be there and you will be better prepared for to make your play.

Sorry if this sounds presumptuous. But I just don't think one can truly love the world, know the world and effectively change the world until one loves, knows and changes one's self.
